Here are the pictures of my old lighting rig that used Triacs to dim the lights up and down.

It was a 6 channel unit, with on / off switches on each channel, but if I remember even on the individual off state there was a small biasing voltage on the lights to keep them warm and to stop cold switch on so prolong the life of the spot bulbs.

Its amazing what old stuff you can find in your loft.
